These indigenous groups have been the worst
hit by the large scale exploitation of the natural
resources through the development of mines,
industries and commercial exploitation of
forests. Since their lives are closely related to
nature, any adverse impact on the environment
in which they live will adversely affect their lives and lands. They should contemplate on the

be taken in the state in this regard. Awareness
Sustainable Environment through Education
Today environmental sustainability
has become a global concern. Rapid
industrialization and our growing
transportation, infrastructure etc. have affected
our planet’s fragile ecosystem, resulting to global
warming. Hence protecting and preserving the
capability of the environment to support life
on earth today has become the serious issue.
And awareness regarding making responsible
decisions and taking actions in the interest of
saving and protecting environment should be
known to all human beings big or small. This
can only be imparted through the medium of
education.
The term environmental education is often
used to imply education within the school
system, from primary to post-secondary.
Environmental education is the teaching of
individuals, communities, society about the
knowledge and awareness of environment
and its associated problems and providing
probable solutions. UNESCO emphasizes that
environmental education is vital in imparting an
inherent respect for nature among the society and
in enhancing public environmental awareness.

be instrumental in creating awareness and
educating masses to a great extent. They should
impart knowledge regarding the benefits of

Today many schools have included
environmental education as an additional
or elective subject in their curriculum. At
the elementary school level, environmental
education is imparted through field trips,
projects, experiments, outdoor activities.
Students are made part of some interest clubs,
organizations groups or programms related to
environment protection.
Apart from these organized activities in the
schools, students are also encouraged to develop
certainhabitsleadingtosustainable development
like switching off lights when leaving the room,
walking to nearby shops or markets instead of
riding bike or car, using recyclable products,
reusing water, minimum wastage of natural
resources, planting trees in their areas etc. A
proper mind set can be developed in them to
work towards measures to control all forms of
pollution air, water, soil, sound etc.
Environmental education as a process
of imparting awareness, knowledge and
information with regard to the sustainability
of environment, its problems and solutions,
prepares students as future citizens to make
ecologically sound choices and to participate
in cleaning up and caring for the environments.
